Tips for Managing End-of-Year Events with Children

November 21, 2024

The end of the year is always a whirlwind. Calendars fill up, and suddenly, you’re navigating a series of end-of-year events and children’s activities and maybe even trying to sneak in some holiday planning.

It’s an exciting time, but let’s be honest—it can also be a lot.

At Gowrie NSW, we know how important these moments are, and we have a few tips to help you enjoy the ride and make it all a bit more manageable.

Why End-of-Year Events Matter

End-of-year events are more than just another thing on your calendar. They’re a chance to hit pause, look back, and realise how much your child has grown—whether it's learning to tie their shoes or mastering a line in a play.  It’s a time to celebrate their wins, big and small, and appreciate the friendships they’ve made along the way. These moments can remind you why the chaos of this time of year is worth it.

Tips for a Smoother Event Season

Plan Early (But Don’t Panic)

Start getting organised sooner rather than later. Look ahead at your calendar and note the key events. A shared family calendar, countdowns, or simple reminders can help everyone stay on track and ensure you don’t miss out on the fun. If you're feeling extra prepared, create a playlist of your family's favourite holiday tunes while driving to events or getting ready at home. Music can be the perfect way to get everyone excited and in the spirit for big days.

Keep Food Simple But Fun

We all know how fussy kids can be, especially when excitement is high. Pack simple, fun snacks for your outings. Think easy-to-eat finger foods that kids can enjoy on the go—cutting fruit into stars, hearts, and smiley faces goes a long way. Your children will feel more involved if they can help prepare these with you.

Activities to Keep the Peace

Waiting around can make anyone restless. Bring some portable activities—think colouring books, simple crafts, or finger puppets for younger children—to keep the excitement going while waiting. If you’ve got some extra time, a mini-scavenger hunt will make the day even more memorable.

Schedule “Chill Time”

Remember to carve out some much-needed downtime for your family between all the festivities. A cosy movie night, a pyjama party or even a quiet reading hour can be the perfect antidote to the holiday hype. This dedicated time helps everyone unwind and recharge their batteries, making the chaotic days more manageable.

Safety First, Always

It’s easy to forget in the hustle, but safety should be a top priority. Always keep an eye out for your little explorers in busy places. If it’s your turn to host an event, ensure the space is safe for all ages—cover sharp corners, remove any tripping hazards, and have a first aid kit handy. If you’re hosting something bigger, consider checking if public liability insurance is needed (boring but important).

Contingency Planning: What If...?

Things don’t always go according to plan (hello, unpredictable weather). Whether it’s meltdowns, unexpected allergies, or last-minute changes. Keep a few indoor games or activities in your back pocket, embrace the imperfections, and don’t be afraid to ask for help when needed.

In Case of Emergency

Pack a small ‘calm down’ kit with comforting items like a favourite toy or book to help soothe your child during overwhelming moments. Always have a few alternative snacks on hand when your child just doesn’t want anything or an event doesn’t cater to younger guests. These small go-to fixes can help you navigate any unexpected bumps.

Take a Moment to Enjoy It

As the year wraps up, take a moment to soak it all in. You and your child will cherish these memories—celebrating wins, surviving the hectic days, and looking ahead to all that’s to come. The end-of-year chaos is temporary, but the joy and pride in seeing your child grow and experience all of it? That’s something you’ll hold onto long after the party's over.
