Event description

During this workshop participants will have the opportunity to discuss the importance of providing a safe and comfortable environment for children to thrive and develop healthy esteem regarding gender expression and identity. Understanding concepts and the way terms such as ‘gender’ and ‘transgender’ are used and how gender identity and expression are observed helps educators to support children and families with differences in gender identity and expression.

This workshop will explore the following topics:

·         Key terms relevant to the LGBTI community

·         Gender identity development

·         The needs of gender variant individuals

·         The use of pronouns, names, language

·         Privacy & disclosure

·         Considerations for staff where a parent is trans*

·         Supporting gender diverse children and their families

About the presenter

The workshop will be presented by Dr Elizabeth Riley who has extensive experience working as a counselor with gender diverse clients at The Gender Centre and members of the LGBTIQ community. For the last 10 years Dr Riley has also been supporting trans teens, parents & families raising gender variant children through counselling, resources and referrals. Along with her experience as a counselor, Dr Elizabeth Riley has contributed to research on Gender Identity, Supervision, Ethics and Sexuality.
